Our picks, walks and tips for November 30 – December 6 · 7 min read
For one week at the start of December, Miami gives itself over to art. Art Basel Miami Beach sits at the centre of things in the Convention Center, but the week is much bigger than one fair. Satellite fairs set up on the sand along Ocean Drive and in hotel rooms on Collins Avenue, the clubs run their own Basel programmes, and the city's museums have major new shows on. Whether you come for the fairs, the institutions or the side events, there's more than anyone can see, so it helps to choose.
Start with the museums, because several are having an unusually strong season. At PAMM, Picasso–Klee–Matisse brings around a hundred works from Berlin's Museum Berggruen, its largest East Coast showing, alongside Latin American modernists from PAMM's own collection. In the same building are Basquiat: Figures, Signs, Symbols, the largest showing of his work in Florida to date, and the first major South Florida survey of John Baldessari. ICA Miami opens Carroll Dunham, the painter's first museum survey of paintings in more than 25 years, along with the first US museum solo of the Yanomami artist Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe, Friedrich Kunath's first US museum show and Naudline Pierre's monumental stairwell commission. At The Bass, Yuko Mohri: Unviolated Imperfection fills three galleries with kinetic and sound installations made from everyday objects, and Pedro y Juana's maximalist environment Aquí is worth seeing too.
Further out, the Margulies Collection pairs a room of light works by Dan Flavin, Leo Villareal and others with Lewis Hine's child labour photographs, shown to the public for the first time. The Lowe has Young, Gifted, and Black, fifty-two works from the Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family Collection. The Frost has a major Louise Nevelson exhibition, and MOCA North Miami has the first museum survey of Geoffrey Holder's visual art. In Fort Lauderdale, NSU Art Museum shows Frozen Gestures, a survey of expressionistic sculpture, alongside Ragnar Kjartansson's room-size Sunday Without Love.
Art Basel Miami Beach opens to the public on Friday, with 272 exhibitors and Zero 10, its curated section for art of the digital era. The fairs that open earlier are reason enough to arrive at the start of the week. Art Miami and CONTEXT open on Tuesday on Biscayne Bay, and NADA Miami brings more than 130 galleries to Ice Palace Studios in Overtown. From Wednesday you have Untitled on the beach, Design Miami with its Curios and Special Projects, and InScope, the new beachside event from the SCOPE team. For something more specialist, try INK Miami for works on paper in its 20th year, PRIZM for artists from Africa and its diaspora, or Feria Clandestina, which shows room by room at the Gold Dust Motel.
Some of the best moments happen away from the fairs. Public Art Fund's Between Tides puts six playable ping-pong tables designed by artists in Collins Park. Soul Basel fills Overtown's Ninth Street mall with a live mural competition and the Kindred Spirit exhibition. AfriKin runs its fair, talks and a closing runway in North Miami, and at Locust Projects in Little River, Edison Peñafiel's 360-degree video sea is worth going out of your way for.
Use Monday and Tuesday for museums and openings: Kunath talks with Klaus Biesenbach at ICA on Tuesday morning. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, The Bass hosts morning conversations with Pedro y Juana, Johnston Marklee and Amalia Pica. Leave Sunday for the museum brunches at the Lowe and the Frost, and for The Bass's community day. Below you'll find picks for every day, a closer look at each neighbourhood, walks and a map.
