SUMMARY:UNTITLED ASSEMBLY: An open\, collective occupation of the ANNEX
LOCATION:ANNEX By The Koppel Project\, 1 Tiverton Street\, SE1 6NT
DESCRIPTION:During this project\, The Koppel Project's ANNEX gallery in Ele
phant & Castle will be made available to the resident artists working with
in their studios for Untitled Assembly\, a temporary\, collectively occupi
ed exhibition.\n\nWith hundreds of artists working across a wide range of
disciplines\, the studios provides the context for an experiment in exhibi
tion-making that begins with a simple proposition: what happens when artis
ts are given access to a gallery without a prescribed theme\, a selection
process or a curatorial framework?\n\nFor four days\, the ANNEX will funct
ion as an open space in which artists can install\, alter\, accumulate\, r
emove and respond to work. Painting\, sculpture\, photography\, moving ima
ge\, sound\, text\, performance and other forms of practice may coexist wi
thin the gallery. Contributions can be temporary or remain throughout the
project\; artists may work independently or in response to one another. Th
e exhibition will develop over time\, with no fixed arrangement or predete
rmined outcome.\n\nUntitled Assembly considers the conditions through whic
h artistic work is exhibited\, circulated and made visible. Within a secto
r in which access to space\, resources and professional networks can shape
an artist’s opportunities\, the project temporarily suspends the conven
tional distinction between those selected to exhibit and those who are not
.\n\nRather than presenting a curated representation of the building’s a
rtistic community\, this initiative makes the exhibition space itself avai
lable as a shared resource.\n\nThere will be no opening reception or priva
te view. The public is invited to visit and encounter the gallery in whate
ver state it occupies. Works may appear\, disappear\, overlap or be replac
ed\; documentation will record moments in the exhibition’s development w
ithout attempting to establish a definitive version.\n\nThe gallery may al
so be entirely empty. There is no guarantee of a particular number of part
icipants\, a minimum amount of work\, or a continuous exhibition in the co
nventional sense. Its presence\, density and activity will depend entirely
on the artists who choose to take part and the decisions they make throug
hout the week.\n\nUntitled Assembly resists defining in advance what the e
xhibition should become. An assembly may be a gathering\, an arrangement o
f separate parts or a collective act. Here\, it describes a space whose fo
rm and meaning will be determined by the artists who occupy it.\n\nThe res
ult may be an exhibition\, a conversation\, an accumulation of unrelated g
estures or a temporary disruption of the gallery’s usual function. Its d
 irection remains open.\n\nhttps://artweekguide.com/events/untitled-assembl
